Fixing Insufficient Funds Error in Stripe Payouts

This guide explains why you might see an "insufficient available funds" error when processing partner payouts and how to resolve it.

Why am I seeing this error?

When you process payouts to partners through Stripe Connect, the funds come from your Stripe account balance. If your available balance is lower than the payout amount, Stripe will reject the transfer.

How to fix this

1

Check your Stripe balance

Open your Stripe Dashboard and navigate to the Balance section. You'll see your available balance, pending balance, and any reserved funds.

Open Stripe Balance
2

Add funds to your balance

There are several ways to ensure you have sufficient funds:

  • Wait for pending funds - If you have pending payments from customers, they will become available after Stripe's standard payout schedule (usually 2-7 days).

  • Top up your balance - You can add funds directly to your Stripe balance from your bank account. Go to Balance → Add to balance in your Stripe Dashboard.

  • Disable automatic payouts temporarily - If you have automatic payouts enabled, your balance is regularly transferred to your bank. You can pause this to accumulate funds for partner payouts.

3

Retry the payout

Once you have sufficient funds in your Stripe balance, return to the Payouts page in Blossu and click the "Retry" button on the failed payout. The transfer should now complete successfully.

Testing in development?

If you're using Stripe in test mode, you can add funds to your test balance by creating charges using the test card 4000000000000077. This card simulates a successful payment that immediately adds funds to your available balance. See the Stripe testing documentation for more details.

Preventing this in the future

To avoid insufficient funds errors:

  • Monitor your balance regularly - Keep track of your available balance before processing large payouts.

  • Schedule payouts strategically - Process partner payouts after you expect customer payments to clear.

  • Consider a reserve - Keep a buffer in your Stripe balance to ensure partner payouts always succeed.
